AVANTI & INDIETRO

Questo libro è la raccolta di sedici conversazioni, iniziate nell’estate del 2017 e concluse alla fine del 2020, con altrettanti artisti che hanno dato forma a un viaggio nel nostro tempo attraverso il loro lavoro.
Tre anni in questa nostra contemporaneità costituiscono una durata tutt’altro che breve.
La quantità di accadimenti individuali e collettivi che cambiano la nostra vita come l’ambiente analogicodigitale nel quale essa si svolge, si espandono oltremodo in conseguenza al loro istantaneo entrare a far parte del flusso di informazioni, di dati, che la rete distribuisce e conserva senza soluzione di continuità. Tra la prima e l’ultima conversazione si è così creato un singolare stato di discontinuità e continuità, che dà una prima ragione al senso del titolo di questo libro, quell’Avanti&Indietro che descrive la dinamica oscillatoria alla quale tutti contribuiamo e partecipiamo.
Gli artisti con i quali l’autore ha conversato sono di diverse generazioni e nazionalità, utilizzano differenti linguaggi, dalla pittura al video, dall’installazione alla fotografia, dalla scultura alla performance ai linguaggi digitali, alcune volte in modo univoco, ma molto più spesso passando dall’uno all’altro o utilizzandoli in modo sincronico.
Avanti&Indietro è la seconda tappa di una trilogia che, iniziata con L’arte senza l’arte, si concluderà con il saggio Il presente e la contemporaneità di prossima pubblicazione.

Raffaele Gavarro

BIO

Raffaele Gavarro è nato a Caserta nel 1963. Vive a Roma.
Si è laureato in Lettere all’Università La Sapienza di Roma (1989) e si è diplomato alla Scuola di Specializzazione in Storia dell’Arte e Archeologia dell’Università di Siena (1995).
È storico dell’arte, critico e curatore. È stato direttore artistico di fiere d’arte a Roma (“Artò – Art Fair in Open City”, 2009) e a Venezia (“Venice Video Art Fair”, 2006 – 2007) e direttore del Festival Internazionale del Videominuto al Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci di Prato (2008-2010).
È stato capo curatore all’Isola di San Servolo di Venezia (2005-2011), curatore indipendente al Museo Macro di Roma (2006) e curatore del Premio Maretti (2011-2013).
Ha curato il Padiglione Italia della 11th Bienal de La Habana (2012). Dalla seconda metà degli anni Novanta ha curato numerose mostre in musei, spazi pubblici e gallerie private in Italia e in Europa, ed è autore di altrettanti testi su artisti italiani e internazionali, nonché di saggi teorici sulle ricerche artistiche attuali, tra i quali: “Oltre l’estetica”, Meltemi Editore, 2007; “L’arte senza l’arte – Mutamenti nella realtà analogicodigitale”, Maretti Editore, 2020; “Avanti&Indietro – 16 conversazioni sull’arte nella realtà e nel tempo analogicodigitali”, Maretti Editore, 2021.
È stato docente di Storia dell’Arte Contemporanea all’Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti di Torino. È docente di Storia e Teoria dei Nuovi Media all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma.

AVANTI & INDIETRO

This book is the collection of sixteen conversations, which began in the summer of 2017 and ended at the end of 2020, with as many artists who have shaped a journey through our time through their work.

Three years in our contemporaneity are anything but short.

The quantity of individual and collective events that change our life like the analogical-digital environment in which it takes place, expand extremely as a result of their instantaneous becoming part of the flow of information, of data, that the network distributes and stores without solution of continuity. Between the first and the last conversation, a singular state of discontinuity and continuity was thus created, which gives a first reason to the meaning of the title of this book, that Forward & Back that describes the oscillatory dynamics to which we all contribute and participate.

The artists with whom the author spoke are of different generations and nationalities, they use different languages, from painting to video, from installation to photography, from sculpture to performance to digital languages, sometimes uniquely, but much more often passing from one to the other or using them synchronously.

Forward & Back is the second stage of a trilogy which, which began with Art without Art, will end with the forthcoming essay The Present and the Contemporary.

Raffaele Gavarro

BIO

Raffaele Gavarro was born in Caserta in 1963. He lives in Rome.
He graduated in Literature from the La Sapienza University of Rome (1989) and graduated from the School of Specialization in History of Art and Archeology of the University of Siena (1995).
He is an art historian, critic and curator. He was artistic director of art fairs in Rome (“Artò – Art Fair in Open City”, 2009) and in Venice (“Venice Video Art Fair”, 2006 – 2007) and director of the International Videominuto Festival at the Centro per l’ Contemporary Art Luigi Pecci of Prato (2008-2010).
He was chief curator at the Island of San Servolo in Venice (2005-2011), independent curator at the Macro Museum in Rome (2006) and curator of the Maretti Prize (2011-2013).
He curated the Italian Pavilion of the 11th Bienal de La Habana (2012). Since the second half of the nineties he has curated numerous exhibitions in museums, public spaces and private galleries in Italy and in Europe, and is the author of as many texts on Italian and international artists, as well as theoretical essays on current artistic research, including: ” Beyond aesthetics ”, Meltemi Editore, 2007; “Art without art – Changes in the analogical-digital reality”, Maretti Editore, 2020; “Forward & Back – 16 conversations on art in reality and in analogical-digital time”, Maretti Editore, 2021.
He was professor of Contemporary Art History at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin. He is professor of History and Theory of New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.
