Il battesimo di Cristo nell’arte
Un viaggio dalle catacombe all’arte contemporanea, dall’Oriente all’Occidente europeo, con un’apertura sull’arte extra-europea (Asia, Africa, America), per raccontare un evento fondatore della storia cristiana. Il Battesimo di Cristo, ricevuto all’età di circa trent’anni e raccontato dai quattro Vangeli, mette fine al lungo silenzio sulla vita a Nazareth – il precedente episodio raccontato era il Ritrovamento tra i Dottori del Tempio all’età di dodici anni – e rappresenta il portico d’ingresso sul successivo digiuno nel deserto per quaranta giorni, al quale seguirà il ministero pubblico, che lo condurrà alla Passione, Crocifissione e Resurrezione. Il Battesimo gli fu amministrato, su sua richiesta, dal cugino diventato eremita nel deserto e predicatore, Giovanni Battista, che inizialmente rifiutò dichiarandosi indegno e infine obbedì, imponendogli la mano sulla testa o compiendo un gesto di unzione, mentre Gesù si immergeva nel fiume Giordano. In quel momento ebbe luogo una solenne teofania: lo Spirito Santo scese su Cristo mentre la voce del Padre lo designò come il Figlio prediletto. Questo momento inaugurale costituisce una sorta di archetipo del sacramento che ricevono tutti i battezzati “nel nome del Padre, del Figlio e dello Spirito Santo” in occasione del Battesimo che li ammette come membri della Chiesa.

Il battesimo di Cristo nell’art
A journey from the catacombs to contemporary art, from the East to the West of Europe, with an opening on extra-European art (Asia, Africa, America), to tell a founding event of Christian history. The Baptism of Christ, received at the age of about thirty and recounted by the four Gospels, puts an end to the long silence on life in Nazareth – the previous episode recounted was the Finding among the Doctors of the Temple at the age of twelve – and represents the entrance portico on the following fasting in the desert for forty days, which will be followed by the public ministry, which will lead him to the Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection. Baptism was administered to him, at his request, by his cousin who became a hermit in the desert and preacher, John the Baptist, who initially refused declaring himself unworthy and finally obeyed, placing his hand on his head or making an anointing gesture, while Jesus plunged into the Jordan River. . At that moment a solemn theophany took place: the Holy Spirit descended on Christ while the voice of the Father designated him as the beloved Son. This inaugural moment constitutes a sort of archetype of the sacrament that all the baptized receive “in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” on the occasion of Baptism which admits them as members of the Church.
