Uscito con testo bilingue in latino e tedesco a Norimberga nel 1658, l’Orbis sensualium pictus ebbe subito grandissimo successo e diffusione. Cogliendo e rendendo produttivo il nuovo ruolo dell’immagine nello sviluppo e nella diffusione del sapere moderno, l’opera ha a suo tempo rivoluzionato e influenzato profondamente l’istruzione scolastica in Europa e testimonia di una concezione pedagogica che collega l’apprendimento della lingua alla trasmissione delle più importanti nozioni sul mondo e sulle cose. Facendo leva sull’efficacia comunicativa immediata delle immagini, mette in connessione il mondo percepito attraverso i sensi e l’ambito delle parole. Oggi difficilmente reperibile, questo libro fa da ponte, come nota Benjamin nel saggio qui riprodotto in appendice, tra il mondo del Barocco, con la sua fascinazione per geroglifici ed emblemi come segnature di un sapere esoterico, e il ruolo fondante dell’immagine in una concezione moderna e scientifica del sapere secondo cui «nulla è nell’intelletto che non sia prima stato nei sensi». Giacinto Di Pietrantonio
Giacinto Di Pietrantonio Direzione della GAMeC (“ Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo”). Docente di Storia dell’Arte presso l’Accademia di Brera, ha ricoperto il ruolo di Redattore Capo prima e Vicedirettore poi per Flash Art Italia dal 1986 al 1992. Dal 1994 al 1996 è stato consulente per le arti visive della Regione Abruzzo. E’ stato curatore del Corso Superiore di Arti Visive presso la Fondazione Antonio Ratti di Como dal 1995 al 2004.

Released with a bilingual Latin and German text in Nuremberg in 1658, the Orbis sensualium pictus was immediately a great success and spread. Capturing and making productive the new role of the image in the development and dissemination of modern knowledge, the work revolutionised and profoundly influenced school education in Europe and bears witness to a pedagogical conception linking language learning to the transmission of the most important notions about the world and things. Relying on the immediate communicative effectiveness of images, it connects the world perceived through the senses and the realm of words. Difficult to find today, this book acts as a bridge, as Benjamin notes in the essay reproduced here in the appendix, between the world of the Baroque, with its fascination for hieroglyphics and emblems as signs of an esoteric knowledge, and the founding role of the image in a modern, scientific conception of knowledge according to which ‘nothing is in the intellect that has not first been in the senses’. Giacinto Di Pietrantonio Direction of GAMeC (“Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art of Bergamo”). Professor of Art History at the Brera Academy, he held the role of Chief Editor first and then Deputy Director for Flash Art Italia since 1986 to 1992. From 1994 to 1996, he was a consultant for visual arts for the Abruzzo Region. He was the curator of the Advanced Course in Visual Arts at the Antonio Ratti Foundation in Como from 1995 to 2004.

Ginevra Quadrio Curzio is a philosopher and Germanist. She has worked on the translation into Italian of
Schriften of Walter Benjamin in the context of the critical edition of the Works of the publishing house
Einaudi publishing house and translated and edited together with Prof. F. Desideri of the University of Florence the correspondence between
W. Benjamin and Th. W. Adorno. He has also written about contemporary art and German culture for the
the Berlin daily newspaper Berliner Zeitung, the daily newspaper Il Foglio and its Sunday paper Il Foglio dei ritratti
as well as the Sunday paper Il Sole24Ore.
